How the Internet Has Changed Communication

The internet has changed the way we communicate in so many ways. Before the internet, people had to rely on things like letters, newspapers, television, and phone calls to stay connected and get information. It was a lot harder to communicate with people who lived far away, and getting news or updates wasn’t nearly as fast as it was today now.

I think one of the biggest changes in communication has been social media. Apps like Instagram, TikTok, and Facebook make it so easy to connect with people, share pictures, and keep up with what’s going on in the real world. During Web 1.0, people mostly used websites to find and read information. When Web 2.0 developed, people were able to interact more by posting, commenting, and sharing their own content.

Another big difference is how digital communication allows people to respond and interact with information. With media, like television or newspapers, people mainly received information without being able to respond directly. Now, people can comment on posts, share their opinions, and even communicate with businesses. Companies can also use analytics to see what content their audience enjoys most.

A good example of a company that has adapted to these changes is Walmart. Walmart used to rely mostly on commercials, newspapers, and printed ads to reach customers. As the internet became more popular, Walmart started using its website for online shopping. Today, Walmart has a mobile app, social media accounts, and online services that make it easier for customers to shop and stay updated (Walmart, n.d.).

Overall I think the internet has made communication faster, easier, and more convenient. From the early days of ARPANET to today’s social media and artificial intelligence, it’s interesting to see how much technology has changed the way we connect with others (Leiner et al., 1997).
